While the kit employs qualitative testing methods, it is essential for verifying the proper fit and effectiveness of respiratory protective equipment (RPE). This testing process also serves as an excellent training tool, educating employees on the correct way to fit masks for optimal protection.

Poor fitting and improper care of dust and half masks often lead to inadequate protection. The most common issue arises from the seal between the face and the edge of the mask. Users frequently compromise this seal by wearing masks improperly, such as leaving them on their heads or hanging around their necks.

The testing method involves a specially designed hood that creates a small test chamber around the user’s head, along with a test solution that has a distinctly bitter taste—similar to substances used to deter children from chewing toys or fingernails. This setup allows employers to conduct the test effectively, providing a cost-effective solution for assessing the suitability of the selected RPE and the training provided to ensure employee safety.

Please note that full face masks cannot be tested with this kit, as the test hood is not large enough to accommodate masks fitted with filters.
